Our Story

The Story Behind My Baits
Designed for the Bass, Not the Angler

Every bait I design begins with one question:
How does a bass experience this lure—before it ever sees it?

Bass don’t strike because something looks good to us. They strike because something feels alive to them. Long before vision comes into play, a bass is reading pressure changes, vibration, and water displacement through one of its most powerful tools—the lateral line.

That’s the foundation behind every bait I make.

The lateral line is a specialized sensory system in largemouth bass that runs along the full length of their body, from behind the gill cover to near the tail USAngler. It’s made up of a series of pores and canals in the scales, each containing neuromasts — clusters of sensory cells with hair-like cilia surrounded by gelatinous tissue iere.org+1.

How It Works

When water moves or pressure changes, water flows into the lateral line canal through the pores. This movement bends the cilia of the neuromasts, sending nerve impulses to the brain iere.org. The brain interprets these signals as information about:

  • Location of objects in the water

  • Size and movement of prey or predators

  • Direction of movement (the lateral line is directional, unlike the inner ear) americansportfish.com+1

Frequency Range

Bass lateral lines are most sensitive to low-frequency vibrations (about 1–80 cycles per second) from small prey like minnows americansportfish.com. Some fish can also detect vibrations up to ~200 Hz, with overlap with hearing in the 50–200 Hz range The Minimalist Fisherman. Higher-frequency sounds (100–13,000 Hz) are detected by the inner ear, but the lateral line is better at pinpointing direction The Minimalist Fisherman.

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. – Brian Huskins of Mt. Holly, N.C., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 8 ounces Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division event on Lake Wylie. For his victory, Huskins earned $5,247.

“My day started out pretty disappointing,” said Huskins. “I had a bad boat draw, #No. 49, and I didn’t think that I would get to my spot before anyone else did. I was right, and when I pulled up there was already a competitor sitting there. I’m very happy he was. I ended up heading to my second spot and started catching a lot of fish.

“Saturday I had the most success with a Brian’s Bees 1.25-ounce Ditch Digger Rattling Bait. We were fishing deep, from 27 to 35 feet, and I had the best luck when I was fishing the Ditch Digger really aggressively. I had my first limit by 10 a.m., and was able to cull up six or seven times on the day. The biggest difference for me in this event was using my De-Liar scale. I won this event by 1 ounce, and there were a couple of fish where if I would have guessed based on looks I would have been wrong. Some of the smaller fish ended up weighing more, and that really helped me to win this event.”
